Asheville Anglers guide Travis Honeycutt takes Dan Wright for a day of fly fishing on the watauga river. Dan is a master certified casting instructor and was a fising guide all over the country for many years. So before the trip ever began Travis and Dan had became good friends. But by the end of this fishing day Dan and Travis became really good friends. Its days like this that make you remember why you guide. We talked every topic under the sun expressed our opinons and why they were right. Endured every weather condtion except snow and sunshine. And fishing was just an average day for most of it. We had caught plenty of trout and a few decent fish but they just weren't eating great. So towards the end of our 7 mile float Travis pulls out the streamer rod and gives it to Dan telling him he may catch a smallmouth. After about 7 cast Dan sets the hook and finds himself hooked up with a nice striper! We land the fish take pics high five and release. Next cast, even bigger striper! Dan puts this one in the net and he is pushing 12 lbs. We took pics hugged and were laughing like little girls by this point. Then he hands Travis the rod and tells him to try. Two cast later hooked up! Travis puts another 7 lb striper in the boat. By this point we don't know whether to keep fishing or just go home and not spoil the day. But we kept fishing! We move down river a 100 yds and keep stripping and Dan hooks another 12 pounder but gets broke off. We replaced our fly and before long another 10 pounder on the line! After a couple minutes that fish just came unhooked. It is moments like that, that a man fishes his entire life for. Countless days of tying flies, rowing boats, coaching clients for that 20 min of surreal action where time stands still and nothing exist but you, your buddy and a fly rod doubled over.
